One possible good outcome of a Drumpf presidency would be the drastic reduction of H1Bs, which would lead to software engineers finally being able to pay rent in Silicon Valley

It’s a great system that gives visas to foreigners who were educated for free to come work here where US kids can’t afford college and are derided as irresponsible for wanting college to be somewhat affordable. Why can’t they just get a small million dollar loan from their father? Anyone that wants to kill off the H1-B program can’t be all bad.

College in India isn’t free. They do practically give away the degrees to anybody who pays tuition though, so there’s that. Basically you just have to be from a family that has money and fill out some paperwork, then enjoy your CS degree and $3/hour contracting gig, which is still way more than anybody else there makes.

Do a comparatively good job and we’ll sponsor your visa so you can come to the US and make $40,000/year doing entry level charliework for 72 hours a week. What are you going to do about it, quit and move back to India?

The college degree requirement for entry level jobs is the dumb part, not the fact that we expect somebody who wants an education to pay for it.
The supposed shortage of qualified Americans has nothing to do with college being expensive and everything to do with soulless companies wanting indentured servants who can’t leave. They make up completely ridiculous job requirements that even the foreigners don’t meet, then say they can’t find anybody here to fill the position.

Then they make the current IT staff train their H1-B replacements.  It’s happening at the Bank of New York right now.  Disney did it a couple months ago.

Why is this not illegal?

“Tech companies hire H1B’s so they can skimp on paying US-trained software engineers”

“Rents are too high in the Bay Area because of tech sector hiring”

These two sentiments that I see frequently expressed seem contradictory.
